A Brief History of Morris Corfield & Co Ltd
In 1956, during the agricultural boom of the post war years Leslie Morris established LP Morris at Craven Arms, Shropshire. It grew as an agricultural engineering firm, focussing on manufacturing of livestock equipment and the sales of agricultural machinery.
In 1960 Leslie Morris partnered with John Corfield to found Morris Corfield at Much Wenlock, also in Shropshire. Morris Corfield boomed as it saw the potential of the Zetor tractor brand. It became the distributor of Zetor, which was well ahead of its time and keenly priced. The business quickly grew and took on Claas equipment, which was then focussed on harvesting machinery. At the same time LP Morris found Claas to be the most popular harvesting machinery in its area, which it soon augmented with Renault tractors.
By the 1990's Morris Corfield had a sound reputation for tractors and built on its Zetor business by becoming a major importer of the Austrian Steyr tractors, for which it won the best new product prize at the Royal show. Just a few years later Valtra tractors were also adopted and became very successful.
The business needed new depots and so opened an office at Bromyard, Herefordshire. In 1999 Leslie P Morris Ltd merged with Morris Corfield, focussing on machinery sales as opposed to manufacturing. The relationship worked well and a new depot at Tarporley, Cheshire followed in quick succession.
Claas purchased the Renault tractor factory in 2003, with a history of both product ranges Morris Corfield found itself well placed to meet the demands of the new Claas brand. However, the business remains family owned, with all the shareholders working in the business.
Recently Morris Corfield found itself the main supplier of large equipment, such as combines, in its area and needed larger premises. In 2010 the main depot moved from Much Wenlock to a new four acre site at Broseley in Shropshire. From these new buildings the sales and service teams offer a dedicated service and are supported by an equally skilled parts team who can draw on vast stocks held on site.
